What is a KITAP?

KITAP is a permanent stay permit, which is quite difficult to obtain but provides enormous benefits to foreigners who wish to establish their livelihood in Indonesia.

KITAP stands for Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap which translates as permanent stay permit card.

You can only apply for a KITAP once you have obtained a KITAS (limited stay permit) and had extended the latter multiple times. Unlike any other stay permits in Indonesia, the KITAP is valid for five years. If after five years there are no changes to the status of the expat, the visa is extended automatically; you need to apply for a new card.

Types of KITAP.

The requirements and conditions vary depending on your eligibility. Below are a few examples:

KITAP for foreigners with an Indonesian spouse

Foreigners legally married to an Indonesian can convert their KITAS into a KITAP after two years of marriage. Your spouse will be the sponsor of your KITAP.

Keep in mind that you will not be eligible to apply for a KITAP if you haven’t had a KITAS first. The marriage itself make you automatically eligible.

After two times obtaining KITAP, a foreigner has rights for citizenship by applying to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

Foreign investors, directors and commissioners working in an Indonesian company

The candidates mentioned above can apply for the KITAP once they have been working with the same Indonesian company for five years in a row in the same position.

Benefits of having a KITAP.

The most significant benefit of the KITAP is that you are allowed to stay in the country without extending your stay permit and visiting the immigration department every year. In addition, you will be eligible to apply for:
  • Indonesian ID with a validity of five years
  • Local driver’s license (SIM) with a validity of five years
  • Bank account
  • Credit card
  • Loan
  • Local prices to tourist attractions
  • MERP with a validity of two years, allowing you to enter and exit the country as you like
  • If you are married to an Indonesian citizen, then you will be eligible for a joint ownership over a property
Elibigility criteria
